South Wales Dragons snatch victory from London Metro

South Wales Dragons win BBS Primary Club National Knockout Cup at Lords final

South Wales Dragons, Wales’ leading visually impaired cricket club, saw off competition from ten other teams to win the highest accolade in British domestic blind cricket.

They beat London Metro, the nation’s best-known blind cricket club in the final.

It was a thrilling final hosted by the MCC at Lord’s cricket ground and the winners took away the British Blind Sport & Primary Club Knockout Cup.

"We’re absolutely delighted - Metro is without a doubt the best known blind cricket team in the country which makes this victory particularly special," said Neil Prior, chairman of the South Wales Dragons. "It’s the third time we’ve won the cup – the most prestigious competition in domestic blind cricket - and we’re already looking forward to facing challengers next season. We had to battle hard for this and we’re not going to give it up easily."

"We’ve been sponsoring this cup for many years," added Derek Underwood, patron of the Primary Club. "Every year I am amazed by the quality of the cricket reached in the cup final and this year was no exception. As a cricketers’ charity, it’s really important for us to support blind cricket and this cup final held at Lord's enables our members and anyone with an interest in blind cricket to come along and see what the Primary Club helps to achieve."

Cup matches are 30 overs per side. The team with the highest core from their 30 over wins.

Notable Dragons’ players included Keryn Seal who at just 22 is a highly talented England international for both blind cricket and football, and Don Baker still playing top quality blind cricket at 62 who at 59 was the oldest player to take a wicket at Lord's. Captain Damian Corrigan, who has scored over 1,000 runs this season, hit an impressive 63 in the final helping to take the Dragons to a victorious 180. Metro stumped up 126.

The cup and medals were awarded by Primary Club chairman Robert Fleming.
